ISIL-inspired man arrested for plotting to blow up Congress

Christopher Lee Cornell, 20, also known as Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, plotted to kill US lawmakers in Washington because he considered members of Congress to be his enemies, according to the FBI.
 
Cornell had indicated to undercover FBI informants that he supported the brutal ISIL group and was carrying out the attack on Congress on their behalf.
 
Cornell has been charged in a federal court in Ohio with attempting to kill a US government officer and possession of a firearm to commit a violent crime.
 
"The alleged activities of Cornell highlight the continued interest of US-based violent extremists to support designated foreign terrorist organizations overseas, such as ISIL, by committing terrorist acts in the United States,” the FBI and Department of Homeland Security said in a bulletin after the arrest.
 
“Terrorist group members and supporters will almost certainly continue to use social media platforms to disseminate English language violent extremist messages," the bulletin read.
 
The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control large parts of Iraq and Syria.
 
The terrorists are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control. They have terrorized and killed people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
