Uzbekistan’s Karimov nominated for presidential reelection

Islam Times - Uzbekistan’s incumbent president Islam Karimov has been named for reelection in the country’s next presidential vote scheduled to be held in March.


The Movement of Entrepreneurs and Business People and the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan nominated Karimov for re-election at a congress on Thursday.
 
"Taking the voters' opinion into consideration, the party unanimously voted in favor of nominating President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov as its candidate," the party’s spokesman said.
 
Uzbekistan’s next presidential election has been set for March 29.
 
Karimov won 88.1% of the vote or over 13 million votes in the country’s last presidential election held in December 2007, according to the Uzbek Central Election Commission.
 
Another candidate Asliddin Rustamov  was placed second with 3.17% of the votes, followed by Dilorom Toshmuhamedova with 2.94% and Akmal Saidov with 2.85%.
 
Karimov has been the president of Uzbekistan since 1991.
