Damascus slams US, EU duplicity in letter addressed to UN

In response to the letter, the Syrian Foreign Ministry sent two separate notes to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and President of the UN Security Council Dato Ramin Ibrahim.
 
In the notes, the Syrian Foreign Ministry described the move by the signatories to the letter as media hype aimed at diverting attention away from the main point that the Syrian government is battling terrorists, adding that the signatories to the letter ought to stop "shedding crocodile tears" for the Syrian people.
 
Since the onset of the crisis in Syria, the foreign ministry said, the countries that signed off on the letter have played a detrimental role in the situation in the Arab country by covering up all sorts of atrocities carried out by the terrorists, and giving all-out military, intelligence, financial and logistic support inside and outside the UN to the foreign-backed terrorists and regarding as illegitimate Damascus’ rightful bid to defend its soil against the militants.
 
On June 18, the United States and some of its allies signed a letter addressed to the UN secretary general as well as the presidents of the UN Security Council and General Assembly, demanding that Syrian forces stop aerial attacks, particularly in Aleppo, and urging the UN Security Council to take measures to prevent the Syrian Air Force from carrying out future assaults.
 
Russia and China, two veto-wielding members of the Security Council, were not among the signatories.
