Major blast at Afghan capital’s airport kills five, injures 17

10 Aug 2015 12:08

Islam Times - An apparent car bombing attack has rocked the Afghan capital’s international airport, killing at least 5, injuring 17 and reportedly leaving extensive damage.

“The explosion occurred at the first checkpoint of Kabul airport,” said the deputy chief of Kabul police, Sayed Gul Agha Rouhani, on Monday.

Early reports cited Health Ministry spokesman Wahidullah Mayar as saying that at least five people were killed and 17 others injured in the bombing attack.

Local reports further cited witnesses as saying that the target of the car bombing was a convoy of armored vehicles that usually transport government authorities.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing, in which the driver of the vehicle carrying the explosives detonated near the main entrance gate of Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport was also killed.

The incident marked the fourth bombing attack in the Afghan capital in the past three days.

A Friday morning blast shook Kabul’s Shah Shaheed neighborhood when Taliban militants reportedly detonated a truck bomb, killing at least 15 and wounding dozens more bystanders.

Meanwhile, two more back-to-back blasts also rocked Afghanistan’s capital city Friday night, killing at least 27 police recruits along with a NATO officer as well as eight civilian contractors that worked for the alliance.
