Hacktivists release personal info of 50mn Turks, including President Erdogan

5 Apr 2016 06:56

Islam Times - Hacktivists have released the personal information of nearly 50 million Turkish citizens including that of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The unnamed group uploaded national ID numbers, addresses, birthdates and the names of parents of 49,611,709 Turkish nationals in a 6.6-gigabyte file on Monday.

The seemingly politically motivated leak, which has been partially verified, is one of the largest of its kind.

"Who would have imagined that backwards ideologies, cronyism and rising religious extremism in Turkey would lead to a crumbling and vulnerable technical infrastructure?" wrote the hackers on the download page.

In order to prove the authenticity of their data, the group published what is claimed to be Erdogan’s information.

On the download page the group also listed several technical encryption “lessons” and a personal note aimed at the Turkish and US governments.

“Do something about Erdogan! He is destroying your country beyond recognition. Lessons for the US? We really shouldn't elect [Donald] Trump, that guy sounds like he knows even less about running a country than Erdogan does," the note said.

This is not the first time Turkey has been targeted by hackers. The Anonymous hacking collective recently released a 17-gigabyte data trove from the Turkish national police database, and in 2015, they “declared war” on the country over Erdogan’s reported support of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group.
