US, Australian professors kidnapped by armed men in Kabul

8 Aug 2016 05:38

Islam Times - Two foreign professors have been abducted at gunpoint from outside the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul.

On Sunday, Kabul police chief Abdel Rahman Rahimi confirmed that the kidnapped professors were US and Australian nationals.

The US State Department has announced its awareness of the incident, but declined to comment “due to privacy considerations.”

The incident comes just a few days after the Taliban officially claimed responsibility for an attack on a convoy of foreign tourists in the country’s western region.

The militants have intensified attacks following the appointment of Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada as the new leader of the Taliban.

According to a report by Amnesty International, at least 1.2 million Afghans have been internally displaced due to violence in the past three years.

Afghanistan remains gripped by insecurity 15 years after a massive US-led military invasion of the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

The war removed the Taliban from power, but terror and instability is still rampant in the Asian nation despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.
