Tens of Turkish Diplomats, Military Officers Sought Asylum in Germany after Failed Coup
In response to a parliamentary investigation, the Turkish interior ministry said 35 holders of diplomatic passports have formally applied for asylum. The report gave no details regarding their identities, positions or statutes.

Ankara initiated a widespread crackdown on oppositions accusing them of connections to the failed coup attempt that Turkey blames on the US-based opposition leader, Fetullah Gulen.

Some units of the Turkish military tried to overthrow the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on 15 July but failed after his supporters took to the streets to stop the coup.

Afterwards Turkey recalled scores of diplomats and military staff but many of them sought asylum in European countries, including the military attache in Berlin, Col. Ayhan Dagli.

The Interior Ministry said any extradition request by the Turkish government would be examined on a case-by-case basis by higher regional courts.

Last month Turkey officially asked the German authorities to locate, arrest and hand over two high-profile prosecutors, Zekeriya Oz and Celal Kara, who are accused of plotting to overthrow the Turkish government.
