White House rejects calls for special prosecutor in Russia probe

During a Monday briefing in Washington, White House press secretary Sean Spicer rejected remarks by Republican House Representative Darrell Issa, who recently said that a special prosecutor is necessary in matters related to Trump instead of his attorney general, Jeff Sessions.
 
Spicer answered a question by an ABC reporter with another question.
 
“I guess my question would be: A special prosecutor for what?” the White House spokesman said. “We have now for six months have heard story after story about unnamed sources say the same thing over and over again and nothing has come of it.”
 
He added that the intelligence community and committees in the House and Senate were already engaged in an investigation to determine if Russia played a role in the Republican nominee’s victory on December 8, 2016.
 
“So the question becomes at some point, what do you need to further investigate if there is nothing that has come out?” Spicer said. “How many times do you have to come to the same conclusion before you take the answer?"
 
A proponent of better ties with Russia and President Vladimir Putin, Trump has faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.
