Mich. court may vote on Muslim face veil issue

Chicago Tribune , 17 Jun 2009 14:46

The Michigan Supreme Court may decide if judges should have more say in how witnesses dress in court.

The issue is on the agenda for the high court's administrative conference Wednesday morning.

Justices heard last month from a Muslim woman from Hamtramck (Ham-TRAM'-ehk) who sued because her small claims case was dismissed when she refused to remove her veil.

A proposed statewide court rule would let judges regulate the appearance of witnesses. Judges say they need to observe witnesses' faces.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan says there should be exceptions for people whose clothing is dictated by their religion.

The court also could vote on rules governing the use of cell phones and electronic devices by jurors and lawyers.
