Pompeo made the comment during a Senate subcommittee hearing, aimed at covering several foreign policy challenges for the United States.

“I’m confident that when the president meets with Vladimir Putin he will make clear that meddling in our elections is completely unacceptable,” said the former CIA director.

Meanwhile, the president’s national security adviser, John Bolton, was meeting with Russian officials in Moscow to prepare for an upcoming summit between the two leaders.

After the 2016 presidential election, which yielded President Trump, the intelligence community concluded that Russia had interfered in the vote, an accusation dismissed both by Moscow and Trump.

Four former Trump associates have either pleaded guilty or been indicted in the so-called Russia probe. This is while the president believes that the investigation is a "hoax," a “witch hunt,” or a “scam.”

The investigation seeks to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump’s aides after the intelligence community’s conclusion that the Kremlin helped with the New York billionaire’s campaign effort ahead of winning the White House, an allegation dismissed both by Moscow and the president.
