Out of public earshot, the mysterious summit is held at Hotel Fairmont Le Montreux Palace in Montreux, on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva, from Thursday until Sunday.
Participants, 130 political leaders and experts from industry, finance, labor, academia and the media, are allowed to speak openly at the annual forum but under Chatham House rules are strictly barred from revealing the details of the discussions.
According to the official website of the Bilderberg Meeting, participants will discuss 11 central topics now debated across the globe, including the future of capitalism, the weaponization of social media, artificial intelligence, Brexit, China, Russia and so on.
The participants include US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and Middle East adviser Jared Kushner, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, American politician Stacey Abrams, former senior American foreign policy official Henry Kissinger, former chief executive of Google Eric Schmidt, and retired general David H. Petraeus.
A number of top bank executives are also on the list.
The Bilderberg Group, established in 1954, is an invitation-only community which holds annual meetings with approximately 140 guests attending. It is comprised of many wealthy and influential people in the fields of politics, banking, business, the military, and news media.
The group defines the conference as “a forum for informal discussions about major issues facing the world. The meetings are held under the Chatham House Rule, which states that participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s) nor any other participant may be revealed.”
Although the names of attendees and the agenda for conference are available on their website, the group holds its meetings in private and there are no press releases about them, which has raised suspicions about the Bilderbergers.
