Referencing California GOP of the 1990s, Gavin Newsom made the comment in an interview with Politico released Monday as Democratic races were heating up across the country for the 2020 presidential election.

“America in 2019 is California in the 1990s,” he told Politico. “The xenophobia, the nativism, the fear of ‘the other.’ Scapegoating.
Talking down or past people. The hysteria. And so, we’re not going to put up with that. We are going to push back.”

The GOP's failure in the state is partly due to Former California Gov. Pete Wilson's (R) push for a 1994 ballot measure that banned undocumented immigrants from gaining access to public schools and health care.

The Democrat further voiced support for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, engaged in efforts to impeach US President Donald Trump.

“What’s so remarkable about someone with the experience and temperament of Speaker Pelosi is that she’s seen a lot of movies,’’ Newsom said. “She’s been there. She’s got a better sense than a lot of folks. So I think we should stay the course. What we’re doing is working ... I think Democrats are winning right now.”

The Democratic majority in the lower chamber of US Congress has so far failed to reach a consensus on impeachment of the president.

Trump is under investigation in part for alleged obstruction of justice in the wake of the outcome of the so-called Russia probe by special counsel Robert Mueller.
