German diplomat: We call on Tehran to return its decision on the stockpile of enriched uranium

2 Jul 2019 08:12

Islam Times - A source at the German Foreign Ministry said that Berlin was very concerned about Iran's announcement on Monday that it had exceeded the "ceiling" stipulated in the nuclear agreement of the low-enriched uranium stockpile.

"We call on Iran to return this step and stop undermining the nuclear agreement," the source news agency "Reuters" said. The source added that Germany will carefully consider the next steps in coordination with other participants in the nuclear deal.

Earlier in the day, Iran announced it had exceeded its maximum stockpile of LEU under the 300-kilogram nuclear deal, which was later confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The move came more than a year after Donald Trump's administration withdrew from Tehran's nuclear deal with six "international mediators" and reinstated US sanctions on Iran.

Tehran justified its move by not implementing European obligations under the agreement, especially with regard to the establishment of a financial mechanism to ensure the survival of commercial transactions between Europe and Iran to circumvent the US sanctions, especially under conditions of tightening Washington's economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif confirmed his country's readiness to return its decision if the three European countries signatories to the agreement (Britain, France and Germany) meet their obligations under the nuclear deal.
