Islam Times - Bolton says Washington favors a no-deal Brexit

Islam Times - US National Security Adviser John Bolton has said the United States "enthusiastically" supports a no-deal Brexit.

The European Union's French chief negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier had warned Britain if it wanted to avoid a no-deal Brexit then London needed to stick to the divorce agreement signed with Brussels.

“If the UK wants to leave in an orderly manner, this treaty is the only option,” Barnier said in May.

On the first day of a two-day visit to London on Monday, Bolton said Brexit was not only an important statement regarding the rule of Democratic values for the British people, but also for the Americans.

“Britain’s success in successfully exiting the European Union will be a statement about democratic rule and constitutional government. That’s important for Britain. But it’s important for the United States, too," he said.

Bolton added that Britain's exit from the European Union was in US' interest.

"We see a successful exit as being very much in our interest," he insisted.

Bolton said if the new UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson were to opt for a no-deal Brexit, the US would "enthusiastically" support the move.

“If that’s the decision of the British government, we will support it enthusiastically, and that’s what I’m trying to convey," Bolton told reporters on his first day during his visit to the British capital, according to Politico citing the Guardian.
