Rocket attack kills six civilians north of Baghdad

26 Aug 2019 09:41

Islam Times - At least six people have lost their lives and nine others have been wounded in a rocket attack by suspected Takfiri Daesh terrorists at a sports stadium north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, security officials say.

In a statement released on Sunday, Iraqi security officials said the attack targeted a soccer stadium in Daquq, in the ethnically diverse province of Kirkuk, late on Saturday.

“Six civilians were killed and nine others were wounded in an attack with rocket-propelled grenades and medium-grade weapons,” the statement said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but law enforcement agencies said “terrorist gangs” were involved, an apparent reference to Daesh.

Daesh started an offensive to take over territory in Iraq in 2014, overrunning swathes. Iraqi army soldiers and allied fighters then launched operations to eliminate the terror outfit and retake lost territory.

In December 2017, Iraq declared the end of the anti-Daesh military campaign. The group’s remnants, though, stage sporadic attacks across Iraq.
