Holding moment of silence for 9/11 becomes law at NY schools

11 Sep 2019 09:26

Islam Times - Schools in the US state of New York have been mandated to remember the 2001 terrorist attacks.

"September 11th Remembrance Day," was an outcome of legislation signed by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, just days ahead of the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

"9/11 was one of the single darkest periods in this state's and this nation's history, and we owe it to those we lost and to the countless heroes who ran toward danger that day and the days that followed to do everything we can to keep their memory alive," the governor’s office said in the announcement. "By establishing this annual day of remembrance and a brief moment of silence in public schools, we will help ensure we never forget — not just the pain of that moment but of the courage, sacrifice and outpouring of love that defined our response."

The September, 11, 2001 attacks, also known as the 9/11 attacks, were a series of strikes in the US which killed nearly 3,000 people and caused about $10 billion worth of property and infrastructure damage.

US officials assert that the attacks were carried out by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists but many experts have raised questions about the official account.

The latest measure in New York was also expected to “encourage dialogue and education in the classroom.”
