A mortar round landed near the US embassy in central Baghdad on Monday, causing no casualties, a security source said.

The security information cell issued a statement late Monday on the targeting of the Green Zone in Baghdad.

"Two mortar shells landed in an empty dirt yard around the Green Zone and the other in the Tigris River in Baghdad, without any incident," said in a statement.

As quoted by the site "Alsumaria News" one of the security sources said that "an explosion occurred inside the Green Zone in central Baghdad, without knowing its nature," and "warning sirens were fired in the region in anticipation of any emergency."

It is noteworthy that the capital Baghdad is witnessing from time to time car bombs, explosives and explosive belts, in addition to sporadic attacks targeting civilians and members of the security services in different areas, which resulted in dozens of people were killed or wounded.

The well-protected "Green Zone" includes foreign embassies and Iraqi government buildings.
