The Kremlin is very concerned about Turkish military operations in Syria

20 Oct 2019 13:55

Islam Times - Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that the development of events in northeastern Syria could harm the political settlement process in this country.

Peskov pointed out that the recent developments in northeastern Syria are of great concern to the Kremlin, and that these events "may harm the political settlement."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has previously announced that he plans to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on October 22 in the Russian city of Sochi to discuss with him the establishment of a so-called "safe area" in Syria on its border with Turkey.

On October 9, Turkey launched a military operation in northern Syria against Kurdish fighters. Damascus described the operation as "aggression," and Ankara's move faced widespread international condemnation.

On October 13, the Syrian government sent its army troops to the north of the country, based on an agreement reached between them and Kurdish leaders to control Kurdish-controlled areas.
