Six Iraqi MPs resign

MP Muzahim al-Huwait began his resignation since Saturday, he was joined today by MPs Haifa al-Amin, Raed Fahmi and Taha, and then Hassan al-Aqouli and Youssef al-Kalabi.

"The past days have shown the inability of the government and the House of Representatives to meet the demands of the demonstrators, to respond to the will of the people and to start the process of change," Fahmi and El-Amin told a joint news conference.

They added, "The first steps should be the resignation of the current government and the formation of a government of national competencies away from the quota system and corruption, which prepares the requirements for early elections after the change of the entire electoral system and the enactment of a fair election law."

The MPs pointed out that "in line with the position of our Communist Party supporting the masses, we announce our resignation from the membership of the House of Representatives and stand by the uprising."

Since Friday, October 25, Baghdad and nine other provinces have been rocked by protests against the government's policies, including violence and burning of political party buildings by some infiltrators, killing and wounding dozens of demonstrators and security forces.

The Iraqi government spokeswoman, Asifa Moussa, on Sunday, supported all the demands of peaceful demonstrators and their intention not to prevent demonstrations, she pointed out that the government continues to issue reform packages, including reducing the salaries of all officials.
