Facebook agrees to pay a nominal fine of 500,000 pounds
The fine was first issued in July 2018, but Facebook appealed the ruling demanding the Office of the UK Information Commissioner (ICO) to share material that prompted the decision to pay the symbolic fine.

A few months later, Facebook agreed to drop her petition and would pay the fine, but that did not mean "accepting responsibility", since the fine was not accompanied by a statement of responsibility.

James Dibble-Johnston, Deputy Commissioner of Information, said: “The main concern of the Office of the Information Commissioner is that the UK citizens' data are at serious risk.” and he added that "We are pleased to hear that Facebook has taken, and will continue to take, important steps to comply with the fundamental principles of data protection."

Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was questioned by US and EU lawmakers about how the political consulting firm obtained personal data for 87 million Facebook users.

The Office of the British Information Commissioner had previously ordered the small and symbolic fine last year after he said that at least one million British users were among the data collected by Cambridge Analytica and used for political purposes.
