10 People Killed and More Than 270 Thousand Displaced Due to Floods in Somalia

2 Nov 2019 06:13

Islam Times - Heavy rains have killed at least 10 people, displaced more than 270,000 people in Somalia and destroyed infrastructure in the Horn of Africa nation, the United Nations said on Friday.

Experts say East Africa is experiencing heavy rains and floods that have driven families from their homes.

Residents in the town of Baladwayne in central Somalia said a river had overflowed, killing 10 people after a boat capsized while trying to rescue stranded residents.

A tropical storm is expected next week to aggravate the situation.

Rainfall is expected to continue until the end of the year, and aid organizations are warning of possible water-borne diseases and mass displacements.
