Nicola Sturgeon Demands a Scottish Independence Referendum

2 Nov 2019 06:40

Islam Times - Scotland's first minister, Nicolas Sturgeon, has announced that she will formally ask the British government for the necessary powers to hold a second independence referendum following the December 12 general election.

'If people in Scotland demonstrate the desire - as I believe they will in this election - for an independence referendum, then I don't believe Westminster opposition to the principle or to the timetable to that will prove to be sustainable,' she said.

The Scottish nationalist leader said she believed that if Labor wins the election, he would not oppose the possibility of calling the government to a referendum.

She revealed that she would send a letter "before Christmas" to the next prime minister to formally demand the powers in "Section 30", which gives the Scottish parliament the necessary powers to hold the referendum.

Sturgeon said a good outcome for her Scottish National Party would be seen as support for the referendum, so she called on voters to support it "to ensure Scotland's voice to be heard."

The Conservatives, led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said they would not be given permission for a new referendum, while the Labor Party had not shown clear opposition.

Since the Brexit victory in 2016, the SNP has vowed to hold a new referendum as Scotland voted by a majority to stay in the European Union.
