Spain Elects a New Parliament for the Second Time This Year

10 Nov 2019 07:01

Islam Times - 37 million voters in Spain will go to the polls on Sunday to vote in a new parliamentary election for the second time this year.

Opinion polls showed that the Socialist Workers' Party of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is likely to win the largest number of votes, but Sanchez is also unlikely to win a majority to form a government, a result that would prolong the political stalemate in Madrid.

For months, Sanchez tried to form a coalition government in vain after the last parliamentary elections in April, prompting King Philip VI to call another election.

The Spaniards, who cast their ballots for the fourth time in four years, seem bored with multiple votes which is reflected among other things, by the low number of postal voters compared to April.

According to opinion polls, the far-right Fox populist party could continue to grow and become the third largest political force, after winning nearly 10 percent of the vote in April's elections.

Polling stations are open from 9 am to 8 pm (0800 to 1900 GMT) and in the Canary Islands from 10 am to 9 pm.
