Germany Rejects Trump's Call to Abandon the Nuclear Deal

11 Jan 2020 06:28

Islam Times - Germany confirmed that it still wanted to "salvage" the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, rejecting US President Donald Trump's calls for Europeans to abandon it.

"Our goal remains to save the agreement ...," German Foreign Ministry spokesman Rainer Bruel said in Berlin, as his remarks coincided with those of Britain and France, who stressed their continued commitment to the agreement.

On Wednesday, Trump backed away from the brink of being drawn into a war with Iran, but indicated that "the time has come" for the rest of the signatories of the nuclear deal to "give up the rest of it."

"We want to use all the possibilities offered by (the agreement) to move toward a diplomatic solution," Browell said, urging Tehran to "return to its obligations" contained in the 2015 agreement concluded with the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China.

France said on Thursday that it remains "committed to the framework of the Iranian nuclear agreement signed in Vienna."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson considered that the agreement was still "the best arrangement currently available".
