Islam Times - Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told him that "significant progress" had been made in talks between the United States and the Taliban on an agreement to withdraw US forces from Afghanistan.

Ghani said on Twitter on Tuesday that Pompeo had told him in a telephone conversation that the Taliban had made a proposal for "a significant and continued reduction in violence."

Peace negotiations between the United States and the Taliban have been going on for years without reaching a specific result.

Several rounds of discussions were held between the Afghan government and the Taliban in the Qatari capital, Doha.
