Egypt's Mubarak to face criminal court

Islam Times reports from Egypt's public prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday that Mubarak and his sons Gamal and Alaa will face criminal court on charges of killing protesters, abuse of power and wasting public funds.

The developments come three months after a historic revolution ousted former Mubarak and his associates from power.

The 82-year-old Mubarak, currently in police custody in an Egyptian hospital, is reportedly suffering from repeated heart attacks which occurred during interrogation.

Mubarak's sons were also taken into custody over accusations of corruption and abuse of authority.

During his trial, Mubarak's former interior minister, Habib al-Adly has testified that the former president had ordered him to use violence against protesters.

At least 846 people were killed during the uprising in the country which led to the eventual fall of Mubarak in February.

Judicial sources say Mubarak could face the death penalty if found guilty of killing anti-regime protesters during the revolution.

Egyptian protesters have also demanded the prosecution of officials belonging to the former regime --mainly the ousted president Mubarak and his family.

They have promised to continue their mass demonstrations until their demands for social reforms are met and former regime figures are tried. The protesters also want the army to hand over power to a civilian government as part of the promised reforms.
