President Assad issues decree to set May 7th as parliamentary elections date
Elections would be held for two hundred and fifty seats, 127 of them are dedicated for workers and peasants.

Parliamentary elections come after Syrians agreed on a new constitution which gives political parties the right to have representatives in the parliament.

Up till now, more than 6 political parties have been established. The question is would new political parties participate in the elections?

Syrians also feel comfortable, in the sense that the government is fulfilling its promises and implementing reform.

The coming elections are considered the first step in implementing the recently agreed-upon constitution. They would be also held according to the new elections law.

Newly-established political parties are now able to participate in the political life in Syria and have representatives in the parliament, as the new constitution has cancelled the law that used to give only the Ba’ath Party the right to rule the state.
