Immigrants protest US broken immigration system
They’re blocking access to major highways to call attention to the rampant deportations going on in America.

The action follows an announcement from U.S President Barack Obama that some younger immigrants will now be eligible to obtain a 2-year work permit.

But immigrant rights’ groups say the announcement doesn’t go far enough in meeting the campaign promises President Obama made four years ago.

Protesters say they’re concerned the policy change could be just another campaign promise made during an election year.

And they’re angered that President Obama did not implement the Dream Act legislation, which would provide younger immigrants a path to citizenship.

However, they say that the work-permit program will help the 65-thousand undocumented immigrants who graduate from high school each year.

Some undocumented protesters say they would be afraid to file for a work permit knowing that it might lead to deportation if President Obama does not enforce the policy.

Younger immigrants who are facing deportation now say the American government needs to do more to earn their trust.

Los Angeles police officers were on the scene but no arrests are being reported. Protesters eventually cleared the streets then held a rally in front of ICE headquarters.

Dream Act supporters say over the next few weeks they will monitor the Obama administration to make sure this new policy is enforced.

In the meantime, supporters say they will continue to push for the passage of the full Dream Act to give younger immigrants a legal path to citizenship.
