Israeli pres. rules out unilateral strike on Iran nuclear facilities

    "Now, it's clear to us that we can't do it alone... It's clear to us we have to proceed together with America,” Reuters quoted Shimon Peres as saying on Thursday.
 
 
He said his talks with his US counterpart Barack Obama has convinced him that "this is an American interest" to halt Iran's nuclear energy program, expressing confidence in Obama's attempts to prevent the Islamic Republic from enriching uranium on its soil.
 
The remark comes as Israeli media accuse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak of pushing Israel into a unilateral attack on Iran.
 
The Israeli public has already reacted to this by staging anti-war protests in Tel Aviv.
 
Iran has been the target of numerous sanctions and embargos over its nuclear energy program, which Washington, Tel Aviv, and some of their allies claim may include a military aspect.
 
Iran refutes the allegation and holds that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
 
Tehran has also vowed a crushing response to any attack on its soil.
