Turning a blind eye to the Israeli aggression on the blockaded coastal enclave which has led to the killings of at least 41 Palestinians since November 14, Westerwelle said on Friday that “Israel has the right to defend itself.”

The German minister, who is said to be a homosexual, also held the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, responsible for the outbreak of violence in Gaza.

This comes as Westerwelle stopped short of pointing to the fact that the Israeli regime initiated the deadly airstrikes that targeted the car of Ahmed al-Ja'abari, the popular and influential head of the Hamas military wing, the Ezzedeen al-Qassam Brigades on Wednesday.

Meanwhile on Friday, Ahmed Abu Jalal, a field commander of the Ezzedeen al-Qassam Brigades, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the central Gaza district of Maghazi.

The Israeli military frequently carries out airstrikes and other attacks on the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

The apartheid regime of Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education.
