"We must look at this situation calmly and wait for the conclusions that Italian politicians will draw from this complicated vote," Moscovici said.

The statement follows elections which ended in stalemate in the parliament between Italy’s right and left.

The French minister added that the vote in Italy “creates problems” but does not undermines progress in the eurozone.

He also urged Italian politicians to cooperate with center-left Democratic Party leader Pier Luigi Bersani, who narrowly won in the parliament’s Lower House.

The alliance or the political party that receives the most votes in the lower house automatically gains a majority of 340 of the 630 seats. However, any Italian government must also achieve a majority in the Senate.

Reports say a second round of elections within the coming weeks is likely in Italy as a government was not appointed.

Most political analysts believe Bersani will seek an alliance with Monti to secure a stable government, assuming parties gathered under Monti's centrist banner gain enough votes.

While Bersani has found much in common with Monti, a large part of his party's base is considerably further to the left and could rebel.
