'Bomb attack kills 9, injures 20 in Iraq'

Story Code : 256698
The explosion occurred on Sunday in downtown Fallujah, located roughly 69 kilometers west of the capital city of Baghdad, Xinhua reported, citing unnamed police officials.

The officials noted that the number of casualties is also expected to rise as rescuers were still working at the site.

No group claimed the responsibility for the attack.

Sunday’s bombing marks the latest in a spate of violence in the country.

On Saturday, six people were wounded at election centers as Iraqis were voting in provincial elections nationwide, the first poll in the country since 2010.

Bombs were also detonated in the days preceding to the elections, despite heightened security.

On April 14, at least 10 people, including a provincial elections candidate and seven policemen, lost their lives in multiple attacks across the country.

Elections were held in most of Iraq's 18 provinces to replace local councils elected in 2009.
