Wiki Leaks aftermath: UN Human Rights Chief Pushes for an investigation on US and Iraq’s use of torture and murder of civilians
Pillay’s office released a statement saying, "The US and Iraqi authorities should take necessary measures to investigate all allegations made in these reports and to bring to justice those responsible for unlawful killings, summary executions, torture and other serious human rights abuses.

Pillay expressed disgust in the US when commenting on the files which indicate that “the US knew about the widespread use of torture and ill-treatment of detainee …and instances in which US forces killed civilians at checkpoints and during operations.”

Chief Pillay also called on Iraq to sign up on to the International Convention against Torture, which outlaws the practice, and to facilitate visits by UN monitors in Iraq to detention facilities.

The Wiki Leaks website released nearly 400,000 classified military documents which show the US’ use of illegal torture tactics, while adding 15,000 more civilian deaths to the US disclosed figure of 50,000.
