Trump impeachment more likely than removal: US lawmaker

Sherman’s announcement to introduce articles of impeachment against the president received a resounding endorsement from constituents during a town hall meeting on Sunday at Reseda High School in Reseda, California, The Los Angeles Times reported.  
 
Sherman read out the “high crimes and misdemeanors” Trump has committed during his six months in office for which he thinks the president should be impeached and dismissed. Several hundred people who attended the town hall cheered the announcement.
 
The San Fernando Valley representative, however, also tried to play down expectations for Trump’s immediate removal, either by impeachment or through the 25th Amendment which empowers members of an administration to remove a president in the country’s national interest.
 
For this, Trump’s entire Cabinet should back the dismissal, but the president could remove any cabinet member he deemed was turning against him, Sherman said.
 
“Impeachment is more likely than the 25th Amendment, and it could take a few more shocking things to happen,” Sherman said. “We’re not there yet.”
 
Four in ten Americans now support Trump’s impeachment and removal from office, according to a new poll.
 
The poll released Thursday by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) found that 40 percent of Americans back impeaching Trump, compared to 30 percent who said the same in February.
 
Numerous surveys have shown that Trump is the least popular US president early in a White House term since World War ll.
 
The US Constitution stipulates that a president can be impeached for committing "high crimes and misdemeanors," but a majority vote in the House of the Representatives, currently controlled by Republicans, is required to impeach a president.
