Trump tweeted on Tuesday that the highly decorated former Commander of US and NATO Coalition Forces in Afghanistan had been "fired like a dog" by former president Barack Obama

Trump also retweeted an article from conservative television and radio talk show host Laura Ingraham’s website Lifezette titled “Media Didn’t Like McChrystal Until He Started Bashing Trump.”

Trump's attack on McChrystal came after the ex-commander criticized the president's military policies on Sunday.

McChrystal, who in the past led the US forces in Afghanistan and served in both Iraq wars, then went on to question Trump’s sudden decision to withdraw up to half the 14,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan.

He said Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan would reduce any incentive for the Taliban to negotiate a peace deal with foreign forces occupying the country since 2001.

McChrystal criticized Trump for wasting the US military forces efforts.

Trump “basically traded away the biggest leverage point we have,” he said.

He also slammed Trump personally, calling the president "immoral" and dishonest.

Speaking on ABC TV's This Week program, McChrystal criticized Trump for not telling the truth most of the time.

He said he would not work for the Trump administration if asked, citing the president's dishonesty.

"It’s important for me to work for people who I think are basically honest, who tell the truth as best they know it," McChrystal said.

The 64-year-old four-star general, who graduated from West Point in 1976, was described by former Defense Secretary Robert Gates as "the finest warrior and leader of men in combat."
