An explosion also took place inside a polling station in the southern city of Kandahar and at least three wounded were taken to hospital, local officials told Reuters.

The blasts came shortly after polling stations opened their doors to elect a new president amid fears of violence and fraud.

Earlier, on Saturday morning, polling stations in Afghanistan opened its doors to Afghan voters to elect a president.

"We have taken all the necessary measures before the elections to prevent fraud, by taking technical measures, if any groups tries to do anything," Mohammad Mawlana, commissioner of the Afghan election commission, told Sputnik.
