LNA's Haftar Thanks Putin for Russia's Efforts Toward Peace in Libya in Personal Letter

The Kremlin press service said Friday that Libyan National Army (LNA) head, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, had thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin in a personal letter for the efforts toward resolving the Libyan crisis.

“I thank you and express my full support for the Russian initiative to hold peace talks in Moscow, which should lead to peace in Libya. I confirm that we are ready to accept your invitation to visit the Russian Federation to continue the dialogue that has begun. Accept from us deep appreciation and respect,” the letter quoted by the Kremlin says.

Speaking further, the LNA commander expressed full support for peace talks in Moscow and confirmed his readiness to come to Russia to continue the dialogue.

“I thank you and express my full support for the Russian initiative to hold peace talks in Moscow, which should lead to peace in Libya. I confirm that we are ready to accept your invitation to visit the Russian Federation to continue the dialogue that has begun. Accept from us deep appreciation and respect,” the letter quoted by the Kremlin says.

Earlier this day, a diplomatic source told reporters that Haftar was eager to sign a deal with Fayez Sarraj, the head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), at the upcoming Berlin conference on Libya if certain conditions are met.

Last Monday, Haftar met with Fayez Sarraj in Moscow for talks mediated by Russia and Turkey. 

Next day, however, it was announced that the general had left Moscow without signing a ceasefire deal. Following the failed talks, Germany said that it would host Libya peace conference in Berlin on Sunday.

Besides the heads of the conflicting sides, Germany has invited representatives of Russia, the US, the UK, France, China, Turkey and the UAE.
