President Ahmadinejad meets with UN chief in New York

The president also presented a tapestry with the Iranian map to the UN chief before the meeting on Sunday.

    A member of the Iranian delegation said the tapestry is "a token of peace and affection" from the Iranian people.


During the meeting, Ahmadinejad called for closer cooperation between the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the United Nations, saying effective measures should be taken to establish sustainable peace throughout the world.

Iran assumed the rotating presidency of NAM for three years during the 16th NAM Summit held in Tehran in late August.

The two also discussed on ways to end the ongoing crisis in Syria, and urged a peaceful political solution to the country’s unrest.

Ahmadinejad arrived in New York on earlier in the day to participate in the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

    Ahmadinejad is scheduled to address the session on Wednesday and elaborate on the Islamic Republic’s stance on key international issues.


On the sidelines of the session, he will also hold talks with senior officials from the participating countries, other UN figures, heads of regional and global organizations, American university professors and students, religious leaders and Iranian nationals in the US.

This is Ahmadinejad’s eighth trip to New York for a UN General Assembly session since first becoming president back in 2005.
