Eight others were also injured in the bombing, all of whom are reported to be in critical condition. The car bomb exploded near a military checkpoint and the railway station on Friday, an opposition watchdog group said.

The attack came shortly after another car bomb hit the capital, killing at least five people.

Over 35 others were also wounded in the bombing in Damascus’ southern neighborhood of Daf Shawk.

A security source told AFP that the bombing had targeted residential buildings for police officers and their families and that children were among the casualties.

There are also reports of clashes between government forces and insurgents in several Aleppo districts, including Ashrafiah, Aqil, Bab al-Naser and Qastal Harami.

The four-day ceasefire, which was brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), took effect on Friday.

The Syrian army has said that it is fully committed to the truce but it is responding to attacks by armed groups that were in violation of the ceasefire. The Syrian army had repeatedly warned that it would react if armed groups carry out attacks or reinforce their positions, or if fighters cross into the country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the violence.
