Egyptian army targeted by twin bomb attacks in Sinai

Reports say at least four people were killed in the attack against the Egyptian intelligence facility on Wednesday.
 
A military official said that “a large explosion” had struck the military intelligence headquarters in Rafah, on the border with the Gaza Strip.
 
Witnesses say a second blast targeted the military checkpoint, which was located nearby.
 
On September 10, the Egyptian military killed nine militants operating on the Sinai Peninsula, where the army has launched a clean-up operation against the insurgents.
 
Over the past few weeks, the army has killed dozens of militants in the region.
 
The Sinai has long been considered a safe haven for militants.
 
In recent months, the peninsula has witnessed a sharp rise in violence following the military coup that ousted former President Mohamed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood-led government on July 3.
 
Following Morsi’s ouster, his supporters took to the streets in daily protests.
 
The army forces under General Abdel Fattah Sisi have launched a bloody crackdown on Morsi supporters ever since his ouster and arrested more than 2,000 Brotherhood members.
 
According to Amnesty International, between August 14 and 18, at least 1,089 people were killed.
