Fars News Agency had earlier quoted Morsi as saying that Egypt is eager to normalize its economic and political relations with Iran on the basis of common interests.

The news agency said Morsi had made the comments in an interview on Sunday, hours before the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) declared him as the winner of the presidential runoff.

The Egyptian presidential office has now dismissed the report.

Morsi picked up 13.2 million votes out of just over 26 million, giving him 51.7 percent of the vote.

His competitor, Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, received 12.3 million, handing him 48.3 percent of the vote.

Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accords with the Israeli regime and offered asylum to the deposed Iranian dictator, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
