The attack which took place late Monday also led to the killing of at least four Afghan intelligence personnel inside the military airbase and wounded two US-led foreign troops.

The Western military alliance NATO has confirmed that the Chinook helicopter was destroyed after several rockets were fired into the base.

The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, giving a much higher number of casualties.

Violence in Afghanistan has been on the rise in recent months despite the presence of thousands of US-led foreign forces in the war-weary country.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but years into the invasion, insecurity continues to rise across the country.
