Fire and police vehicles are shown at the scene of a shooting at a fire protection business in Downey on October 24, 2012.
The shootings occurred on Wednesday at a business called United States Fire Protection Services and at a home nearby in Downey, a suburban city southeast of Los Angeles.

According to a Downey police officer, Lieutenant Dean Milligan, a man and a woman were killed at the business and the body of a woman was found at the home.

The two other victims -- including a 13-year-old boy -- who were in critical condition, were taken to a hospital.

Police does not believe the shootings to be random, as they occurred at separate locations against the same family.

"We do believe there is a specific reason this family was targeted and we want to know what that is," Milligan said.

The police are still looking for the gunman who apparently fled the scene in a car belonging to the victims or their family members.

The surviving victims do not recognize the shooter and "don't believe him to be a former employee, a friend of the family, or a former friend of the family."

In another shooting in California on Saturday, two people, including a child, were killed and three others were injured in a house, which was also set on fire by the gunman.

Also on Friday, a gunman attacked a beauty salon in Florida, killing three people and critically injuring another before taking his own life.
