Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump waves to the audience during a campaign rally at the American Airlines Center on September 14, 2015 in Dallas, Texas.
In the American Airlines Center sports arena in downtown Dallas on Monday, Trump addressed thousands of his supporters and defiantly declared it was time to stop illegal immigration.

"It's a massive problem," the Republican front-runner said as the crowd cheered and waved Trump campaign signs and US flags.

But as the rally ended, hundreds of Hispanic protesters confronted Trump supporters, shouting "shame on you."  Police struggled to keep the two sides separate.

Trump has said he would deport some 11 million people living in the United States without valid documents and build a wall between America and Mexico.

During his presidential campaign announcement on June 16, he underlined the need to curtail immigration from the southern border and slammed Mexican immigrants for "bringing crime" to the US.

"They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists," the New York businessman-turned-politician stated.

In spite of criticism from his Republican contenders and companies threatening to cut business ties with Trump, he has defended his offensive comments.

Trump has also said he would repeal President Barack Obama's executive order offering protection from deportation for those brought to the US illegally as children.

In November 2014, Obama announced a program of "deferred action" which would allow approximately 45 percent of undocumented immigrants to legally remain and work in the United States.

Trump currently leads the 16 Republican candidates vying to represent their party in the November 2016 presidential election.
